THE PROJECT

QualiTi will develop a novel NDT system to perform a full inspection of billet components. The system will be composed of new and novel phased array and eddy current probes. The QualiTi systems will be able to detect defects created during the manufacturing process that subsequently could become responsible for the loss of life. This clearly illustrates an urgent need to develop new advanced NDT technologies for application during the manufacture of titanium destined for aircraft components.

Technical objectives
  • To develop a novel phased array system capable of inspecting billet, at different locations, with high sensitivity
  • To develop a novel eddy current array system capable of inspecting the near surface area of the billet
  • To integrate the two NDT systems in a fully functional system to be used during the manufacturing process
  • To improve the reliability
QualiTi is a collaboration between the following organisations: I.S.O.TEST Engineering s.r.l, Technical University of Szczecin (SzUT), Tecnitest Ingenieros S.L., TIMET UK Ltd, TWI Ltd and Vermon SA. The project is co-ordinated and managed by TWI Ltd and is partly funded by the EC under the Research for the Benefit of Specific Groups Project ref: FP7-SME-2007-1-GA-222476.
